Economy Watch: ADP Reports Modest Jobs Growth; Car, Truck Sales Down; Shutdown Continues
August’s job gain was revised down from 176,000 to 159,000. The total U.S. light vehicle sales dropped to an annualized rate of 15.3 million units in September from 16.1 million units in August. Much of the drop came from lower truck sales. And Day 2 of the federal shutdown passed on Wednesday without resolution.
Economy Watch: Too Soon to Gauge Shutdown Impact; CoreLogic: Home Values Continue to Rise; Manufacturing Sector Expands
Day One of the federal government shutdown, 2013 version, passed without too much incident on Tuesday. CoreLogic reported that home prices nationwide increased 12.4 percent in August 2013 compared to August 2012. And economic activity in the U.S. manufacturing sector expanded in September for the fourth consecutive month.
Economy Watch: Federal Government Shuts Down; Fannie Mae: Serious Delinquencies Down
Congress was unable to agree on legislation authorizing money for the continued operations of the federal government by midnight on Monday, and so a shutdown began on Tuesday, the beginning of the government’s fiscal year. Fannie Mae reported that the single-family serious delinquency rate for mortgages it owns or controls declined from 2.7 percent in July to 2.6 percent in August.
Economy Watch: Personal Income, Expenditures Up; Freddie Mac: Delinquencies Drop; Consumers More Pessimistic
U.S. personal income increased $57.2 billion, or 0.4 percent, in August compared with July. Freddie Mac reported that its single-family serious delinquency rate ticked down from 2.7 percent in July to 2.64 percent in August. And Reuters/University of Michigan reported that its final consumer sentiment index for September came in at 77.5, down from the August reading of 82.1.
Economy Watch: Pending Home Sales, Mortgage Delinquencies, Unemployment Claims Down
Pending home sales dropped to 107.7 in August from a downwardly revised 109.4 in July. The U.S. mortgage delinquency rate decreased to 6.2 percent from 6.41 percent in July. And for the week ending Sept. 21, initial unemployment claims were 305,000, a decrease of 5,000 from the previous week.
Economy Watch: New Home Sales Up in August; Household Net Worth Hits New Record; Durable Goods Orders Up on Car Sales
New home sales for August have gone up by by 7.9 percent compared with July. The U.S. household net worth increased during the second quarter of 2013 compared to the first quarter. And durable goods orders edged upward 0.1 percent in August compared with July.
Economy Watch: NY Fed President Talks Tapering; LPS: Home Prices Still Rising
The NY Fed president addressed the postponement of tapering question yesterday, stating that there is still not enough evidence that the economy is headed for complete success. And according to Lender Processing Services, home prices nationwide were up 0.6 percent month over month in July.

Employment didn’t make much of a move along the States in August. And Forbes published the latest version of its Forbes 400 list, tracking the 400 wealthiest Americans, which included seven real estate moguls on the list, including Donald Trump.
Economy Watch: Existing Home Sales Rise; Commodities Spike in Wake of Fed Decision; Unemployment Claims Up
The total existing home sales nationwide rose 1.7 percent to an annualized rate of 5.48 million units in August, compared with 5.39 million in July. The price of commodities spiked in light of the Fed’s decision not to taper QE3. And for the week ending Sept. 14, the number of unemployment claims was 309,000, an increase of 15,000 from the previous week’s revised figure.
Economy Watch: Fed Says No Tapering Yet; Housing Starts Rise
The Fed said it is postponing the start of the wind down of its massive monetary stimulus, waiting for more solid evidence of economic growth. And private housing starts were 0.9 percent higher in August than the previous month.
