New home sales were at an annualized rate of 454,000 units in April, up from 444,000 in March. And equity markets worldwide had an unusually rough day on Thursday.

Existing home sales were up 0.6 percent in April. The Federal Open Market Committee of the Federal Reserve gnawed on the subject of exit strategy from the central bank’s fiscal stimulation popularly known as QE3. And Fed chairman Ben Bernanke was before the Congress’ Joint Economic Committee, scolding the federal legislative branch for its frugal reaction to the recession and its aftermath.

Economy Watch: Home Prices Climbing; Truck Tonnage Drops; Philly Coincident Indexes Up
American home values continued to climb in April. The American Trucking Association’s For-Hire Truck Tonnage Index fell 0.2 percent in April after rising 0.9 percent in March. And Philly Coincident Indexes increased in 47 states over the past three months.

The unemployment rate in 40 states and the District of Columbia dropped. The Leading Economic Index increased 0.6 percent in April to 95, following a 0.2 percent decline in March. And consumers seem more optimistic as of mid-May.
