Economy Watch: Office Market Sees Absorption

Reis Inc. reported that the U.S. office market actually saw an increase in occupied space during the fourth quarter of 2010, with tenants taking a net of 2.5 million square feet nationwide. That isn’t a vast amount of space, but it is the first time that there’s been positive office absorption since the third quarter of 2007, according to the report.

AFIRE Survey: U.S. Offers Foreign Investors Bang for Their Buck

Foreign real estate investors would do well to look toward U.S. shores, according to the Association of Foreign Investors in Real Estate’s 19th annual survey. AFIRE, which surveys respondents holding more than $627 billion in global real estate, including $265 billion in the United States, found that investment opportunities are stronger than they have been for the last decade.

In the construction industry these days, no bad news is something like good news, and the U.S. Department of Commerce reported that things didn’t get worse for construction in November. In fact, U.S. construction spending was up 0.4 percent in November compared with October, totaling $810.2 billion during the month. The November figure was down 6 percent compared with the same month in 2009, however.
