Upper Moreland, Pa.–Abington-Jefferson Health held a ceremonial groundbreaking on its long-planned Asplundh Cancer Pavilion, a $75 million outpatient cancer center at the Abington Health campus in Upper Moreland.
About 150 hospital dignitaries and fundraisers involved in the Reimagine Cancer Center Campaign gathered for the event at 3941 Commerce Ave., on May 23, the Montgomery News reported.
By the time it opens in 2017, the new 86,000-square-foot, two-story healthcare facility will feature comprehensive, leading-edge technology across the full spectrum of cancer care. Services will include radiation therapy and chemotherapy with a dedicated oncology pharmacy. In terms of design, the pavilion will offer the latest features to reduce stress and enhance healing, including large walls of windows for outdoor views and natural light, gardens and walking paths, a café serving healthy foods, resource areas for families and patients, as well as a community space for support groups and healing therapies.
The recent merger between Abington and Jefferson Health to create Abington-Jefferson Health will allow Abington Memorial Hospital to integrate the cancer pavilion with the National Cancer Institute-designated Sidney Kimmel Cancer Center at Jefferson in Center City.
Several important donations have been made for the development of the Asplundh Cancer Pavilion, named in honor of the Asplundh family. The children of the late Carl Asplundh and late Emilie Asplundh donated the lead $5 million gift in memory of their parents. In 1928, Carl and his brothers founded the Willow Grove-based Asplundh Tree Expert Co., an international firm that specializes in tree pruning and vegetation management for utilities and government agencies.
