Paul Vanderslice Named CEO of CREFC

His career spans more than three decades.

The CRE Finance Council has named Paul Vanderslice its next president & CEO, effective Sept. 30. Vanderslice will succeed longtime CEO Lisa Pendergast, who announced plans in March to retire in August. Ed DeAngelo has served as interim president & CEO during the transition.

Vanderslice has more than three decades of experience in commercial real estate finance and a longstanding history with CREFC. He spent more than 30 years at Citigroup, where he held senior leadership positions and helped build the firm’s CMBS business.

He later served as CEO of CCRE before joining BMO Capital Markets in 2020. He currently serves as the firm’s head of CMBS.

Vanderslice has been a CREFC member for about 30 years. He previously chaired the organization’s Executive Committee and Board of Governors from 2012 to 2013 and currently serves on the Board of Governors. He has also been a member of various committees and forums and participated in CREFC conference panels.

In this new role, Vanderslice will lead CREFC’s efforts in advocacy, market intelligence, education, industry standards and member engagement across the commercial and multifamily real estate finance industry.

The leadership change comes as commercial real estate finance executives continue to navigate elevated interest rates and refinancing challenges. In July, Pendergast told Commercial Property Executive that CREFC members were focused on capital rules, underwriting standards and how bank capital reaches the market.

Pendergast also pointed to the $875 billion in commercial real estate loans set to mature in 2026, noting that elevated benchmark and mortgage rates could make refinancing those loans challenging.
