Description

Silicon Hills is the company's only multi-division US headquarters outside of St.Paul, MN. Austin Center is composed of nine interconnecting steel buildings, eight of which are laboratory buildings. Each of the eight interconnecting laboratory buildings is 90,000 SF and 5 stories tall. The five-story interconnected administration building is 410,000 SF. A two-story, 55,000 SF white limestone and glass 3M Innovation Center serves as its "front door" in Austin. It includes an auditorium and meeting and training rooms. There is also a 65,000 SF central utility plant and multi-level parking ramps for about 1,500 vehicles and ground parking for more than 150 vehicles. Small conference rooms and coffee areas at intersections between laboratory and administrative buildings act as interaction nodes to encourage impromptu problem solving meetings. Other campus amenities include cafeteria and dining areas, an employee fitness center with lockers and showers, jogging and nature trails, and a library. The services area includes the employee store, barber shop and cashier. This campus also has environmental protection features. On site there are protected or replanted trees more than 8" in diameter or of a particular species (pecan, walnut, butternut and live oak). The grounds are xeriscaped and there is controlled water run-off. Four storm water detention and filtration areas filter the first inch of rain. Additional rainfall is controlled so run-off will not cause flooding downstream.
