Fort Gillem Army Base opened in 1941 and was named after Lt General Alvan C Gillem Jr., the former commander of the Third Army based at Ft McPherson. The 1,168 acre Base officially closed on June 3 2011 and was subsequently sold to the the City of Forest Park. Today, the property has been transformed into a fully zoned and entitled e-commerce and distribution juggernaut called Gillem Logistics.
