Once a part of the Winterthur Estate, the inn was named for Alexandra de Montchanin, grandmother of the founder of the DuPont Company. The village was a settlement home for laborers who worked at the nearby DuPont powder mills. While listed on the National Register of Historic Places, under Federal Law, the listing places no restrictions on what a non-federal owner may do with their property up to and including destruction, unless the property is involved in a project that receives Federal assistance, usually funding or licensing/permitting.

The Inn at Montchanin Village & Spas is made up of 12 buildings on 4.32 acres built between 1799-1910 (±40,000 sf) for different purposes including a blacksmith shop, barn, school house and housing for workers at the adjoining DuPont munitions plant. The Inn opened in June of 1996 and the spa opened in 2008. There are 28 keys (4 suites in Carpenter House, 24 keys in the balance of buildings).
