Built in 1900 as their residence by Arthur Salisbury Hyde and Mary Abbe Hyde, it was designed by the well-known architecture firm Hapgood & Hapgood. That firm designed many residences and commercial buildings in the late 1800s and early 1900s, including the Connecticut Supreme Court building and the original building of the Hartford Insurance Company. The home was designed in the Tudor Revival style, with stucco and cross gables, a steeply-pitched roof, elaborate chimneys, and free-form landscaping. Subsequent to the Hydes’ ownership, it has been owned by the Austin School, a private secondary school, the original campaign headquarters of Congresswoman Barbara Bailey Kennelly (1981) and, since 2000, by Bruce and Molly Louden for their professional offices and offices of other lawyers and psychotherapists.
