Overview Simi Valley is a city located in the southeast corner of Ventura County, California, bordering the San Fernando Valley of Los Angeles and is part of the Greater Los Angeles Area. The city is situated west of the San Fernando Valley and east of the Conejo Valley, just 40 miles from Downtown Los Angeles. Located in the valley of the same name, Simi Valley is surrounded by the Santa Susana mountain range and the Simi Hills. It is the third largest city in Ventura County. A study done by the University of Vermont ranked Simi Valley as the fifth happiest city in the United States and it is also consistently considered one of the safest cities in the country according to FBI crime statistics. Simi Valley is well-known as the home of the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library, where the former president was laid to rest following his death in 2004. Demographics The City of Simi Valley had an approximate population of 127,500 in 2019, up from 124,239 at the 2010 Census. It is largely a commuter bedroom community feeding the larger cities in Ventura County to the west and the Los Angeles area and the San Fernando Valley to the east. Residents are generally affluent and highly educated. Households earned an average income of more than $128,000 per year in 2019 and more than 69% of residents have attended college. Employment and Economy As of May 2019, Simi Valley’s unemployment rate was 2.7%, according to data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics. This was lower than the 3.0% unemployment for Ventura County and 4.2% for California at the same time. There are two main areas of industry in Simi Valley — one in the eastern part of the city and the other one in the west. The primary industries are Machinery & Tools, Metal, Lumber/Wood Products, Food, Plastic Products, Apparel/Textiles and Minerals. The largest division of Countrywide Home Loans, now Bank of America, is situated in Simi Valley. At its height, Countrywide had approximately 10,000 employees in the city. Bank of America has been reducing staff at its home loan department, most recently laying off more than 120 employees in February 2019. The largest employer in is Simi Valley Unified School District, with more than 2,600 employees. Other governmental employers including the City of Simi Valley and Rancho Simi Parks & Recreation District are among the principal employers, as are Simi Valley Hospital and various local businesses and service providers.
