Establishing complete trust in impacted communities, however, is a challenge that benchmarks alone cannot resolve.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Data centers were on the main stage during day two of Greenbuild 2026, being held this week in New York City by the U.S. Green Building Council, which offers LEED v5 for data centers. During a panel titled \u201cBuilding the Digital Future Sustainably: Data Centers and the Next Era of Green Building Infrastructure\u201d executives discussed how they are integrating sustainability into their rapid growth plans and their community engagement.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Data centers present both a challenge and an opportunity for the green building community, said moderator Lauren Kiel, general manager for Bloomberg Green. They&#8217;ve become critical infrastructure, but their rapid growth has raised questions about water, noise, carbon emissions, land use and other impacts.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe question is not whether digital infrastructure will be built,&#8221; Kiel said. &#8220;The question is how it will be built. How will it be powered, operated and integrated into the community center?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-sustainable-solutions\"><strong>Sustainable solutions<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Katie Bachman, vice president of business operations for global data center developer STACK Infrastructure, said community concerns\u2014the top three are water, noise and energy prices\u2014are informing the company&#8217;s sustainable design strategies. For water, they have standardized a closed-loop cooling system, and the noise level is kept under 60 decibels at the property line, for example.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As for impacts on electricity ratepayers, Bachman said, STACK and other hyperscalers have signed the voluntary Ratepayer Protection Pledge, which commits signers to pay for any required grid changes, self-fund their energy when needed, establish distinct rate agreements and pay for all the energy that they reserve. \u201cEven when we are not using it, we will pay for it,\u201d Bachman said. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Standards like LEED provide a lever that communities can pull while providing a common language for all stakeholders, said Noah Goldstein, sustainability lead for data center construction at Google.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Ensuring green building strategies show up in every single project, however, requires developer diligence and close collaboration with suppliers and contractors,  &#8220;So it\u2019s being an active participant in the process that really helps drive the vast sustainability impact,\u201d Goldstein said. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity has-very-light-gray-to-cyan-bluish-gray-gradient-background has-background is-style-wide\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>LISTEN ALSO: <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.commercialsearch.com\/news\/sustainability-street-data-centers-reach-at-a-crossroads\/\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.commercialsearch.com\/news\/sustainability-street-data-centers-reach-at-a-crossroads\/\">Sustainability Street: Data Centers Reach a Crossroads<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity has-very-light-gray-to-cyan-bluish-gray-gradient-background has-background is-style-wide\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-misperceptions-about-data-centers\"><strong>Misperceptions about data centers<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Despite being built to green building standards, data centers are still thought of by many as voracious consumers of resources rather than community assets. &#8220;Honestly\u2014it almost sounds like a pardox\u2014that (data centers) are some of the most energy efficient buildings out there because there&#8217;s so much focus on getting that energy use down,&#8221; noted Beth Lowry, president &amp; CEO of Holder Construction Co. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Many also don&#8217;t know of the &#8220;transformational&#8221; economic impacts on surrounding communities and more distant towns since data centers are often prefabricated elsewhere, Lowry said. Then, there is the educational\/job training aspect. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cUpskilling is a real thing and we\u2019ve partnered across the country with the unions, with the non-unions, to really upskill supervisors,\u201d she explained. \u201cThere\u2019s a lot of talk about that, but it is really happening.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Greater credibility will come through &#8220;absolute transparency&#8221; and the willingness to have difficult conversations, remarked Cyre Mercedes Quinones, CEO of Infrastructure Masons. &#8220;I don\u2019t think credibility means having the answers,&#8221; she said. &#8220;I really do think it\u2019s about: &#8216;are you willing to be honest when you don&#8217;t have the answer and then, once you are transparent, what are you doing about that now?'&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-future-implementation\"><strong>Future implementation<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>While standardization is important, Goldstein said, Google will also look to build in more flexibility since the computer technology is changing so rapidly. It will also look to account for long-term circularity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Bachman said STACK is moving beyond &#8220;design intelligence&#8221; to ensure meaningful public engagement with an understanding that every community has specific requirements. While benchmarks help, she said, the industry needs \u201cmeaningful transparency\u201d through early and ongoing communication.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe need to go public with our projects as early as possible,\u201d Bachman said. \u201cUse NDAs really only when necessary, moving away from this like super-private confidential industry.\u201d At a data center development in Santa Teresa, N.M., for example, STACK has already had eight community tours and a media tour. Further, she said, the industry needs to get better at operational reporting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Communities also need to speak up and tell data center developers what they are missing and what the impacts will be if the building isn&#8217;t there anymore, Quinones said: \u201cIt\u2019s about creating systems. It\u2019s not a one-and-done thing.
