For decades, architects have relied on digital tools for modeling, documentation and analysis. Yet the arrival of generative and learning-based artificial intelligence systems introduces a fundamentally new dynamic\u2014tools that can not only automate tasks but also suggest forms, patterns and design pathways.
So how do you adopt AI without diluting the craft, intuition and history that define architectural practice? The challenge is not only integrating this technology into workflows but also determining when, where and why it should be used and how to balance algorithmic speed with human judgment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

They discuss what guides their decisions around AI adoption, where they see the technology providing the greatest potential and how they maintain the rigor and values that have shaped their firms.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As AI becomes more integral to architecture, how do you keep human judgment and hands-on design central to the process?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n

Jonah Hawk<\/strong>: While it may seem that AI is taking over architectural design, especially in the gen-AI image realm, it is nowhere near replacing the complexity of architecture. AI will permeate all that we do to some degree, but it won\u2019t be able to look at all the criteria and generate a usable model. At ZGF, we still draw, build physical models and work through design problems using traditional, albeit digital, means. Our walls are plastered with pinups and tracing paper and pencils and pens are everywhere. Our model shops are a hive of activity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Grace Lawal<\/strong>: What matters most when it comes to designing with AI is having some level of ownership in the creative process. In other words, the original thought or inspiration for a design prior to introducing the influence of AI. At its best, AI should be helping architects generate more original ideas of their own. We start with a concept, then move to hand sketches or 3D designs, and only after that point is AI welcome to interject. The process evolves into a back-and-forth exchange between our design output as prompts and whatever the AI tool comes up with.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

AI is best used in tandem with human architects, as it can augment their skills and help make better decisions faster by considering data that is too complex or time-consuming for humans to analyze on their own.<\/strong><\/p>\n\u2014Jonah Hawk, Associate Principal, ZGF Architects<\/cite><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

Patrick Chopson<\/strong>: The old model had architects spending maybe 20 percent of their time on actual design decisions. The rest was coordination, documentation and redrawing details they\u2019d drawn dozens of times before. Our model flips that ratio. AI plus human isn\u2019t about preserving the human role in an automated process. It\u2019s a new way of practicing where humans grapple with higher-order problems like program, experience and context, while AI handles the coordination work that used to consume their days.<\/p>\n\n\n

Charles Bloszies<\/strong>: In general, it\u2019s not like you can say to an AI tool: \u2018Design me a house like Frank Lloyd Wright\u2019s Fallingwater,\u2019 and get a full set of floorplans and specifications. It\u2019s a supporting tool, not an all-encompassing system for design.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Justin Benjamin<\/strong>: No deliverable\u2014whether text-based or visual\u2014is shared externally without being reviewed, edited and refined by the design team to ensure it reflects both intent and quality. Where AI has proven most valuable is as a conversational partner rather than a decision-maker. Our teams have become increasingly adept at framing prompts and engaging in iterative dialogue, testing ideas against programmatic requirements, challenging assumptions and exposing blind spots.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

When you bring AI into the design process, what guides your choices around its role and purpose?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Lawal<\/strong>: It\u2019s important to remember the purpose of architecture while using AI: to create an intelligently designed space for people to experience and that would be a benefit to the natural environment. This is the filter that we use when employing AI in the design process. In other words, the design still has to make sense. AI is an increasingly valuable tool, but there are things it may not have the capacity to learn or to perform.<\/p>\n\n\n

Benjamin<\/strong>: We start by identifying real friction points in our process, such as areas where time, budget or human energy are disproportionately spent on repetitive or low-value tasks. When those gaps are clear, we explore AI and other technologies as targeted solutions, not blanket answers. Adoption matters as much as capability. We prioritize thoughtful rollout, training and utilization, often choosing to pilot narrowly and scale deliberately.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Hawk<\/strong>: Cost is, of course, a factor, but ultimately three principles guide ZGF\u2019s decision-making around AI adoption. These include the broad capabilities of the platform and a proven track record on innovation and a future roadmap beyond just the potential of the platform. And lastly, safety and security. Specifically, we\u2019re looking for platforms that are not retaining inputs or outputs nor using those to train the tool.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\n

The biggest challenge is properly conveying exactly what we need when using AI prompts. \u2026 Writing prompts is its own skill set.<\/strong><\/p>\n\u2014Grace Lawal, Project Manager, RKTB Architects<\/cite><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

Chopson<\/strong>: We mapped the complete workflow of architectural delivery \u2014 all 87 steps from concept to construction documents\u2014and asked a simple question at each one: Is this where human design judgment creates value or is it coordination and repetition? AI handles the latter. We built tools for each step, and AI calls the right tools at the right time: pulling code requirements, generating document templates, coordinating consultant deliverables.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Bloszies<\/strong>: As many of my colleagues know, I\u2019m very interested in AI, but so far I don\u2019t see it changing our design process much, if at all.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What challenges have you encountered with AI tools, and how have you addressed them?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n

Chopson<\/strong>: The hardest part was codifying institutional knowledge. Our workflow mapping revealed that experienced architects carry enormous amounts of implicit understanding about what to check, what to anticipate and what\u2019s connected to what. That knowledge had to be made explicit for AI to use it.
Bloszies: The tools we use for parametric modeling and structural analysis would now qualify as AI in today\u2019s lexicon, but we\u2019ve been using them for over a decade.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Hawk<\/strong>: The primary challenges are education and understanding. That includes addressing user fears and dispelling myths about how AI does and does not operate. To overcome this, I give detailed talks around our firm, provide training and encourage my colleagues to dive deeper into the AI tools we have, get comfortable with them and discover their limits.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Lawal<\/strong>: The biggest challenge is properly conveying exactly what we need using AI prompts. I\u2019ve learned, primarily using Midjourney, that writing prompts is its own skill set. Other AI platforms like Grok and ChatGPT can help write serviceable prompts, but ultimately the process is trial and error.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Where do you see AI having the greatest impact or the most potential?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Benjamin<\/strong>: We see the most immediate impact in inspiration and quality assurance. AI-adjacent tools have become deeply embedded in our day-to-day workflow, particularly in early design exploration and rapid iteration. We\u2019ve invested in platforms such as D5 Render, ChatGPT, Copilot, Otter.ai and Miro\u2014not as novelty tools but as practical extensions of how teams think, test and communicate ideas.<\/p>\n\n\n

Lawal<\/strong>: AI is going to have a lot of impact in the schematic design phase for new construction projects. In fact, there are already AI programs that generate test fit layouts in response to prompts for programmatic needs. It\u2019s also very useful for site planning and developing building mass design iterations. AI also promises to become increasingly helpful in architectural visualization, taking a hand sketch or a render as a prompt and mass-producing iterations and upscale original drawings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Hawk<\/strong>: With the recent release of Google Gemini 3 Pro, our rendering and visualization workflow changed virtually overnight. The tool\u2019s speed and accuracy of image creation allow teams to focus on design from the perspective of form, shape, space and sense of place. We no longer need to populate models or images with entourage, plants, trees or, in some cases, specific branded furniture.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Chopson<\/strong>: Freeing architects to be architects again. Right now, most of what licensed professionals do is coordination and documentation. That work requires expertise to do it correctly, but it doesn\u2019t require design judgment. When AI handles tracking dependencies across 87 workflow steps, flagging compliance issues and maintaining consistency across documents, architects can focus on the problems only humans can solve.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
