Over the years, they\u2019ve been undergoing massive transformations that have brought them into the 21st century, catering to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.commercialsearch.com\/news\/beyond-aesthetics-prioritizing-well-being-in-workplace-design\/\">people\u2019s changing needs<\/a> and becoming healthier, community-serving places.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>June Williamson, professor at the City College of New York&#8217;s Spitzer School of Architecture, and Ellen Dunham-Jones, professor at the Georgia Institute of Technology, have been tracking changes in suburban areas since the early 1990s. They put their observations in a series of books about retrofitting suburbia, hoping that they will serve both young architects and city planners who are looking for models to replicate in their own suburban areas. Their first book, <em>Retrofitting Suburbia<\/em>, was published in 2008 and updated in 2011.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The pair\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/retrofittingsuburbia.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">second book<\/a>\u2014<em>Case Studies in Retrofitting Suburbia: Urban Design Strategies for Urgent Challenges<\/em>, released in 2021\u2014serves the starting point of an insightful conversation between the two authors and <em>Commercial Property Executive<\/em> Senior Editor Laura Calugar.
