Tutor Perini Corp. has been selected as the design-build contractor in a public-private partnership (P3) tapped to build the new Miami-Dade County Civil and Probate Courthouse in Miami, in a project estimated to cost more than $260 million.<\/p>\n

The courthouse, which will be built on Flagler Street next to the existing 1928 facility, will provide more than 600,000 square feet of space and services for the Eleventh Judicial Court of Florida, the Clerk of Courts and other related court partners and agencies. The project will include construction of more than 46 jury courtrooms and shell space for an additional four jury courtrooms; a parking area with secure parking for 59 vehicles; site development, including necessary utilities and utility improvements to support the new courthouse; hardscape\/landscape; and road and traffic control improvements. Work is expected to begin in January, with substantial completion slated for early 2024.<\/p>\n

The P3 model provides for the design, construction, financing, operations and maintenance of the courthouse under a single contractual agreement. Tutor Perini is paired with Plenary Group, the developer and financial sponsor; HOK, the architect\/designer; and Johnson Controls Inc., the operations and maintenance partner.<\/p>\n

P3 Growth <\/strong><\/h2>\n

Ronald Tutor, chairman & CEO of Tutor Perini, a leading civil, building and specialty construction company, said in a prepared statement this was the firm\u2019s first successful venture in P3 projects. He noted the P3 market in the U.S. has been steadily growing and the firm\u2019s business development strategy includes targeting more P3 project opportunities. Tutor Perini was previously part of a team that bid on the $5.1 billion LaGuardia Airport Terminal B Redevelopment project, the largest public-private partnership in U.S. aviation history.<\/p>\n

While Tutor Perini did not get the LaGuardia redevelopment, the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey did select the firm, along with Parsons Transportation Group, in February 2018 to construct the $1.4 billion, 1 million-square-foot Newark Airport Terminal One design-build project.<\/a> The Terminal One redevelopment will include a 33-gate common-use domestic terminal. When finished, it will be the largest transportation infrastructure design-build contract in New Jersey history. Completion is expected sometime in 2022. The firm\u2019s other aviation projects include the construction of the $1.2 billion LAS Terminal 3 in Las Vegas; the $513 million SFO International Terminal in San Francisco; and the $267 million JFK Airport expansion in New York.<\/p>\n

Also known for hospitality projects, Tutor Perini has recently completed the Rosewood Miramar Beach<\/a> ultra-luxury resort in Montecito, Calif. Caruso, the owner and developer of the 161-key waterfront resort in Santa Barbara County in Southern California opened the property in March.
