Apple intends to invest $1 billion in a major expansion of its operations in Austin, Texas. Plans call for a new 133-acre campus in the northern part of the metro. The investment is expected to accommodate 5,000 to 15,000 additional employees, which is set to make the tech giant the largest employer in the metro.<\/p>\n

Located less than a mile from its existing facilities, the new campus is slated to be powered by 100 percent renewable energy and to feature 50 acres of open space. Jobs created at the new facility will include engineering, R&D, operations, finance, sales and customer support. Apple currently employs 6,200 people in Austin. <\/p>\n

\u201cTalent, creativity and tomorrow\u2019s breakthrough ideas aren\u2019t limited by region or zip code and, with this new expansion, we\u2019re redoubling our commitment to cultivating the high-tech sector and workforce nationwide,\u201d<\/em> Tim Cook, Apple\u2019s CEO, said in prepared remarks.<\/p>\n

More expansions ahead<\/h2>\n

The tech giant has also announced plans to establish new sites in Seattle, San Diego and Culver City, Calif., aiming to expand to more than 1,000 employees in each of the three cities. Apple also intends to grow its footprint in several other cities, including Pittsburgh, New York and Boulder, Colo., over the next three years.<\/p>\n

Data centers and renewable energy are crucial elements of Apple\u2019s development pipeline. Over the next five years, the company intends to invest $10 billion in U.S. data centers. Furthermore, in a partnership with Akamai, Etsy and Swiss Re, Apple is developing two new wind and solar energy farms<\/a> in Illinois and Virginia.<\/p>\n
