The award marks the third university building to earn the LEED Gold certification.<\/p>\n<p>The expansion, which consists of the addition of the new gallery next to the existing historic chancellor\u2019s residence, was finalized in August 2017 at its new Raleigh location at 1903 Hillsborough St. The project was initially designed to earn USGBC\u2019s LEED certification only to the Silver level.<\/p>\n<h2>Sustainable features<\/h2>\n<p>The building has a design that reduces energy costs by nearly 28 percent\u2014to ensure energy savings are achieved, the facility\u2019s energy use will be regularly measured. Moreover, the current design uses low-emitting refrigerants in its air conditioning systems, has low mercury lighting systems and features a reflective roof that reduces heat absorption from the sun.<\/p>\n<p>Potable water use is reduced by 22 percent through the installation of efficient plumbing and fixtures. The water economy occurs on the exterior too, thanks to the property\u2019s native and water efficient plants, which will reduce water consumption by 52 percent.<\/p>\n<p>About two-thirds of the building\u2019s materials came from manufacturers within 500 miles of the site, with half of the wood used in the building being Forest Stewardship Council-certified for originating from a responsibly managed forest. Overall, the new development used more than 25 percent recycled content and sustainable building materials, while 63 percent of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.commercialsearch.com\/news\/christa-mcauliffe-library-awarded-leed-silver-and-additional-state-funds\/\">construction waste<\/a> was diverted from the landfill through recycling or reuse.<\/p>\n<p>Indoor quality is kept at good levels thanks to the usage of low-emitting interior adhesives, sealants, paint and flooring. Furthermore, the facility is regularly cleaned with environmentally responsible housekeeping practices.<\/p>\n<h2>Efficient transportation<\/h2>\n<p>The location of the property encourages common transportation, having a bus stop in close proximity, and is also accessible by pedestrians and cyclists. Moreover, the building features preferred parking spaces for low-emitting and fuel-efficient vehicles, as well as visitors who carpool or vanpool.<\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cIt was an honor to collaborate with NC State in accomplishing a design that champions our shared commitment to the environment and sustainability,\u201d<\/em> Kenneth Luker, a principal with Perkins + Will, said in prepared remarks. <em>\u201cBy achieving LEED Gold certification, the Gregg Museum team created an example for others to replicate.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>The Gregg Museum also landed a 2018 Honor Award for its design from the American Institute of Architects Triangle Chapter, which is the chapter\u2019s highest level or recognition.
