That would be 1.25 million more travelers than last year, making 2017 the most traveled Independence Day holiday weekend on record.<\/p>\n<p>Some 37.5 million Americans will drive to their destinations, an increase of 2.9 percent over last year, AAA predicted, while 3.44 million people will be flying for Independence Day, increasing air travel by 4.6 percent over last year. Also, 3.27 million travelers, an increase of 1.4 percent from 2016, will look to other modes of transportation, including cruises, trains and buses.<\/p>\n<p>Those kinds of numbers would be good for the hospitality sector, and, to a lesser extent, retailers (especially those near major destinations) and other businesses that cater to tourists. AAA senior vice president Bill Sutherland chalks up the surfeit of travelers this year to strong employment, rising incomes and higher consumer confidence.<\/p>\n<p>Gas prices are also a help.
