The facility is expected to earn LEED certification and will plant vegetation to reduce storm water runoff and improve air quality. The project will implement an intelligent parking system designed to guide patrons to vacant spots and surveillance cameras to promote safety.<\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cThe Grant Park Gateway will be the first facility of its kind in Atlanta, and earned its name because it provides an entirely new way of looking at the entrance to the community. The design benefits the Grant Park neighborhood and respects its history as Atlanta\u2019s oldest park, while addressing parking demands, reducing traffic congestion and improving the overall safety in the area,\u201d<\/em> Mayor Kasim Reed said in a prepared statement.<\/p>\n<p>The city will fund the project through bond revenue and supplement it with additional sources, including the Department of Parks and Recreation\u2019s park improvement funds. Winter Johnson Group, a privately owned and operated Atlanta-based general contracting firm, is constructing the project. Grant Park is a jewel in the city and this new facility will make it even better,\u201d<\/em> Councilmember Carla Smith, whose district includes Grant Park, said in prepared remarks.<\/p>\n<p>The project stems from a 2015 study by the city looking at current and future traffic and parking demands for Grant Park and Zoo Atlanta. During the two-year process, community leaders requested the parking solution to include amenities to enhance Grant Park, Zoo Atlanta and the neighborhood.<\/p>\n<p><em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ajc.com\/news\/local-govt--politics\/atlanta-mayor-reed-unveils-gateway-parking-garage-for-grant-park\/mGk6Jjycr5aE70wDXlmIGM\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">The Atlanta Journal-Constitution<\/a><\/em> noted that the Grant Park neighborhood could see more foot traffic in the future as Georgia State University and developer Carter &amp; Associates turn the area around Turner Field, the former home of the Atlanta Braves, into a $300 million mixed-use redevelopment featuring retail, apartments and a baseball stadium for GSU.
