Beaumont Health will transform the property at Woodward Avenue and 13 Mile Road into a 183,000-square-foot retail development. Construction is scheduled to begin this summer. Demolition, abatement and soil remediation of the old shopping center buildings and townhouses on the 15-acre property has already started.<\/p>\n<p>The new project\u2013located within walking distance from the Beaumont Hospital in Royal Oak\u2013includes a grocery store, a five-story hotel and several restaurants. Exterior facilities include green space, landscape gardens and community gathering areas where festivals and fairs can be held. The development is slated for completion\u00a0by the end of 2018.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe appreciate the city\u2019s support and are very excited to move forward with our plan to revitalize the property, based on the ideas of 6,000 area residents and Beaumont employees gathered through a survey,\u201d Rosanna Morris, president of Beaumont Hospital, said in a prepared statement. \u201cWe have a list of more than 300 retailers interested in space at the new center.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>According to Morris, roughly 10,000 people are visiting the medical campus every day and the number is expected to grow even more after the hospital\u2019s new proton therapy center opens\u00a0this summer.<\/p>\n<p>Beaumont has owned the property since the 1980s and will continue to pay annual property taxes of $435,000 on the property during redevelopment.
