The commissioner of the Department of Capital Asset Management and Maintenance was authorized to sell 44 acres of land at the Worcester State Hospital campus to the Worcester Business Development Corp. to repurpose the site. Plans for the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.commercialsearch.com\/news\/biotech-park-planned-for-historic-boston-site\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">project were announced<\/a> in September 2016.<\/p>\n<p>The redevelopment is part of the Commonwealth&#8217;s Open for Business Initiative that seeks to redevelop underutilized state assets into productive pieces of land. Once completed, the site will create more than 500 jobs in Central Massachusetts.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;When we first developed the Open for Business Initiative, projects that could transform unused state property into revitalized centers for business and economic activity is exactly what we had in mind,&#8221; said Baker, in prepared remarks. &#8220;Allowing DCAMM to work with the WBDC so that they can bring bio-manufacturing jobs to Worcester is a tremendous opportunity for the Commonwealth.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The administration announced the Open for Business Real Estate Asset Leveraging Strategy in October 2015, which identifies unused or underutilized Commonwealth properties that could bring affordable or market-rate housing, support job creation, contribute to a reduction in government expenses, increased revenue for the Commonwealth and local communities, capital investment in state properties, or serve as open recreational space.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis parcel of land had been looked at for a long time as a potential economic development engine and now, thanks to Governor Baker\u2019s Open for Business Initiative, we were able to set a great example of how local government can take advantage of underutilized spaces to generate revenue and economic development,&#8221; said Representative James O&#8217;Day, in prepared remarks.\u00a0&#8220;This will bring initially 150 jobs to the city and the arrival of LakePharma can only mean good things for the city of Worcester moving forward.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><em>Image courtesy of Mass.gov<\/em><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The redevelopment is part of the Commonwealth&#8217;s Open for Business Initiative that seeks to redevelop underutilized state assets into productive pieces of land.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":746,"featured_media":1004163580,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"_acf_changed":false,"_jetpack_memberships_contains_paid_content":false,"footnotes":""},"categories":[1490,21782,21748,21742,10],"tags":[33390,33389],"class_list":["post-1004163579","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-boston","category-development","category-industrial","category-latest","category-northeast","tag-governor-charlie-baker","tag-worcester-business-development-corporation"],"acf":[],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO Premium plugin v28.0 (Yoast SEO v28.0) -
