Greenwood, S.C.<\/strong>\u2014Japan-based Teijin<\/a> Ltd., a chemical, pharmaceutical and information technology company, has recently announced plans to construct a carbon fiber plant on 440 acres of commercial land in Greenwood, S.C. Creating 220 new jobs, the project is expected to bring $600 million in new capital investment<\/a> to the county over the next 13 years.<\/p>\n

The new development will be located along Highway 246 in Greenwood, S.C. According to the Upstate Business Journal<\/a><\/em>, the company paid $6.3 million in June<\/a> for the property at 1122 Highway 246, formerly owned by Carolina Pride Foods Inc. The new facility will supply the automotive, aerospace and industrial markets. Carbon fiber is an environmentally-friendly solution for the advanced manufacturing industry<\/a>. Through this investment, the Airbus supplier will accelerate its global expansion in integrated high-performance material businesses by using its hubs in Japan, U.S. and Europe.<\/p>\n

\u201cAfter an extensive site selection process that included six states, Teijin selected Greenwood, S.C. We were attracted to the diversity of Greenwood\u2019s citizens, the community\u2019s rich history of welcoming foreign investment and the excellent training opportunities available at Piedmont Technical College. We plan to invest in resources to develop new and innovative products to meet the increasing demands of the global carbon fiber market,\u201d said Wayne Trotter, Teijin\u2019s director of Government relations, in a prepared statement.<\/p>\n

Founded in 1918, Teijin is a technology-driven global group offering advanced solutions in the areas of sustainable transportation, information and electronics, safety and protection, environment, energy and healthcare. The group has some 150 companies and around 16,000 employees spread out across 20 countries worldwide.<\/p>\n
