Phase I of what will be renamed the San Pedro Public Market will feature 16 acres of restaurants, shopping, fresh markets, boutique-style office space and more than half a mile of waterfront promenade.<\/p>\n<p>The market will also feature an open-air amphitheater for live entertainment, \u201cfamily-friendly attractions\u201d and other events. The site is on the west side of the Main Channel, directly across from the Port of Los Angeles cargo facilities on Terminal Island and just south of the U.S.S. Iowa Museum.<\/p>\n<p>Phase I was designed by Tim J. Delaney Design and TFO Architecture. Construction will begin in 2017 and will take place in tandem with $52 million of infrastructure upgrades by the Port of Los Angeles. Ports O\u2019 Call was originally built in the 1960&#8217;s, and most or all of the existing structures reportedly will be demolished by the Port in connection with those infrastructure improvements.<\/p>\n<p>The land is owned by the Port, which is expected to sign a 50-year lease with the developers later this year.<\/p>\n<p>The San Pedro Public Market \u201cwill be a focal point and anchor for the efforts the Port of Los Angeles has made over the last decade to create a pedestrian friendly public waterfront from Banning\u2019s Landing to Cabrillo Beach,\u201d Gene Seroka, executive director of the Port of Los Angeles, said in a prepared statement. He noted that the port has invested about $600 million in waterfront access infrastructure over the past decade.<\/p>\n<p>As part of the redevelopment, Ratkovich and Jerico will bring back the Waterfront Red Car trolley service that operated from 2003 to 2015 using vintage and replica Red Cars from the Pacific Electric Railway. The Red Cars are to be restored and take visitors through the center of the San Pedro Public Market.<\/p>\n<p>The redevelopment process has not been a rapid one; a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.commercialsearch.com\/news\/port-of-los-angeles-floats-rfq-for-30-acre-site\/\" target=\"_blank\">Request for Qualifications for the project was issued<\/a> by the Port of Los Angeles in 2012.
