Skanska, the global construction company, has signed a $63 million contract to continue reconstructing nearly six miles of the boardwalk.<\/p>\n<p>It is the latest contract installment for the firm, hired in 2013 to provide construction services along with CH2M HILL, which was contracted to provide engineering design and support services for the reconstruction. In April 2014, Skanska signed a contract with New York City Economic Development Corp. for $202 million to begin the project. A year later, in April 2015, Skanska booked an additional $57 million order from NYCEDC, which is managing the project on behalf of the New York City Department of Parks &amp; Recreation.<\/p>\n<p>The work will be completed in phases and is expected to be completed by Memorial Day 2017. About 4.7 miles of the boardwalk is scheduled to be open to the public by summer 2016. The first two phases are already completed, and the boardwalk is open in those sections.<\/p>\n<p>The new boardwalk is designed to be resilient against storms while providing the community with a beautiful and functional beachfront, according to the Mayor\u2019s Office. The new boardwalk will be constructed with a steel-reinforced concrete deck that will be fixed to steel pipe support piles elevated above the 100-year flood plain. A concrete retaining wall will be built beneath to keep the sand in place. It won\u2019t all be concrete and steel, however, as the new design also includes approximately six miles of planted dunes.<\/p>\n<p>In May, Mayor Bill de Blasio, Sen. Charles Schumer and other officials announced that nearly $500 million in Federal Emergency Management Administration funds had been given to the city to fund the boardwalk reconstruction and other storm mitigation efforts in the Rockaways.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe boardwalk is central to this community\u2019s history and identity \u2013 and the new boardwalk will be a symbol of the Rockaways\u2019 strength and resiliency,\u201d de Blasio said in a prepared statement at the time.<\/p>\n<p>The work will be completed by Skanska USA Building, one of Skanska USA\u2019s four business units. Based in Sweden, Skanska has more than 58,000 employees in North America and Europe. Skanska USA, which is headquartered in New York City, has offices in 33 metro areas and more than 10,000 employees in the United States. Its U.S. division has three other units: Skanska USA Civil, specializing in civil infrastructure; Skanska Infrastructure Development North America, which develops public-private partnerships; and Skanska USA Commercial Development.
