Unitarian church entry<\/em><\/p><\/div>\n

A Unitarian church in Bend, Ore.\u00a0has received the 2015 Honor Award in the international Religious Art and Architecture Design Awards program<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Built by\u00a0Kirby Nagelhout Construction Co.<\/a> and designed by Hacker Architects<\/a>\u00a0for the\u00a0Unitarian Universalist Fellowship of Central Oregon<\/a>,\u00a0the church incorporates a 260-seat sanctuary featuring a minister and choral platform, various classrooms, meeting rooms, administrative offices and support facilities\u2014including a commercial kitchen.<\/p>\n

The building\u2019s design is meant to mirror that of a fractured rock, which shifts and moves in order to admit light and air. The structure is organized around a main circulation and central gathering space, and most of the building\u2019s rooms and suites open up to this public area.<\/p>\n

According to Heery International Inc.<\/a>, who commissioned the project, the building also received a Gold Certificate from Portland-based non-profit Earth Advantage, a company focused on sustainable building practices.<\/p>\n

\u201cSustainability and the church design\u2019s theme of rock, light and air go hand-in-hand,\u201d Richard Young, executive associate at Heery, said in prepared remarks. \u201cWe were proud to work with the architects, the contractor\u2019s team and the client to make sure the theme was pulled through the building\u2019s mechanical operations.\u201d<\/p>\n
