{"id":1004128414,"date":"2015-09-29T07:43:29","date_gmt":"2015-09-29T15:43:29","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/synd.yardi.com\/?p=362204"},"modified":"2021-05-15T06:52:12","modified_gmt":"2021-05-15T14:52:12","slug":"30m-boost-to-kansas-citys-urban-core","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.commercialsearch.com\/news\/30m-boost-to-kansas-citys-urban-core\/","title":{"rendered":"$30M Boost to Kansas City\u2019s Urban Core"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><em>By Anca Gagiuc, Associate Editor<\/em><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/synd.yardi.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/46\/2015\/09\/Choteau-Courts.png\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-362209\" title=\"Choteau Courts\" src=\"https:\/\/synd.yardi.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/46\/2015\/09\/Choteau-Courts.png\" alt=\"Choteau Courts\" width=\"300\" height=\"152\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The former mayor of San Antonio, now U.S. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hud.gov\/\">Department of Housing and Urban Development<\/a> (HUD) Secretary Juli\u00e1n Castro, announced that Kansas City is one of the five winners nationwide to receive $30 million in federal money as part of a $150 million <a href=\"https:\/\/urldefense.proofpoint.com\/v2\/url?u=http-3A__portal.hud.gov_hudportal_HUD-3Fsrc-3D_program-5Foffices_public-5Findian-5Fhousing_programs_ph_cn&amp;d=AwMFAw&amp;c=011sAuWmEGuAVOWaydfJsXUtF8vM85JvnaIeBF_SZL4&amp;r=m4ZHNcVmnU1ZPn1c7tHyVXBXNKkUso4Cr1ANf-ey5HU&amp;m=XjGDe4pY9mFMCHfyhApnlkqYXPg3U3E848Gs2axo5dk&amp;s=S4lFeDrGwqxtCZiTQHPmwZlT0nw3m_TLEAoLJmpnWG0&amp;e=\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Choice Neighborhoods Initiative<\/a> that aims to redevelop severely distressed public housing and revitalize surrounding neighborhoods. The other four winners are Atlanta, Memphis, Milwaukee and Sacramento.<\/p>\n<p>Kansas City will use the grant to replace Choteau Courts and improve the Paseo Gateway. Built in 1958, Choteau Courts is a Kansas City Housing Authority property located northeast of Independence Avenue and the Paseo. The existing structure will be demolished and replaced with a multi-phased mixed-income community comprising 360 units. Moreover, the grant will help improve education, business development, social services and healthcare in the neighborhood.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">\u201cWhat we would like to see is a community that is working together not just to improve housing but to improve job prospects, access to transit and here they are looking at it from a holistic prospective and that\u2019s what really impressed us at HUD,\u201d stated Secretary Castro.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">The HUD grant is for the Paseo Gateway district that spreads out from I-35 to Chestnut Trafficway and from Cliff Drive to Ninth Street. The project is estimated to be completed within five years.
