A partnership between Solar City<\/a> and Habitat for Humanity of San Fernando\/Santa Clarita Valleys<\/a>, along with the California Department of Veterans Affairs, is building solar-powered homes for returning veterans. CalVet<\/a> Residential Enriched Neighborhood is using its patented model to provide veterans with housing and specialized services and training meant to help with adapting to civilian life.<\/p>\n

Carried out by a SolarCity crew that also included seven veterans, the process of installing the new solar power systems took less than a day. As a result 26 homes, the community\u2019s first phase, that are meant for future veteran homeowners have green energy capabilities. The 78-home affordable community is located in Santa Clarita.<\/p>\n

According to the CEO of Habitat for Humanity of San Fernando\/Santa Clarita Valleys, Donna Deutchman, \u201cthe partnership with SolarCity will offer veterans an environmentally friendly community with low cost solar energy that also provides long term savings.\u201d Expected to be available to residents starting with this September, the homes will feature 12 panels per home.<\/p>\n

Veterans will be able to purchase one of the new homes once they will have followed CAlVet\u2019s REN guidelines. These include completing 500 hours of \u201csweat equity\u201d, as per regulations. CalVet REN community partners will train veterans in self-sufficiency and personal growth for a year after they move in.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
