Miami\u2019s urban core is about to witness another transformation. MDM Group announced it has broken ground on the last phase of construction of the Metropolitan Miami (The Met) master-planned development.<\/p>\n

Met Square is slated for completion in mid-2017. Nichols Brosch Wurst Wolfe & Associates<\/a> (NBWW) designed the development which rises on an archeological site that holds Tequesta Indian relics.<\/p>\n

The property is located at 340 SE Third St. on the site of Henry Flagler\u2019s famed Royal Pal Hotel \u2014 which first opened in 1896, soon after the City of Miami formally incorporated.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis is such an iconic project at so many levels,\u201d said Igor Reyes, partner at NBWW.\u00a0 \u201cThe exact location of the City of Miami\u2019s birth is also the site on which its future path as a world-class, international city is being realized.\u201d<\/p>\n

Met Square is a low-rise commercial building that will offer restaurants, shops, an 18-screen cinema, and an attached 43-story residential tower comprised of 391 apartments developed by ZOM<\/a>. A small archeological museum will be placed on the ground floor, displaying relics of the Tequesta Indian settlement and the Royal Palm Hotel under glass, as well as a plaza with preserved archeological vestiges.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe lighthearted nature of the design makes Met Square a very approachable building, an important quality that will contribute to its success,\u201d added Reyes. \u201cOriginally conceived as the \u2018meeting place\u2019 for the users of the preceding Metropolitan Miami buildings (Met I, Met II and Met III), Met Square\u2019s design aesthetic, along with its commercial offerings and historical significance, fulfills its original intention.\u201d<\/p>\n
