The energy company announced last month that it has signed an eight-and-a-half-year lease extension for its 19-story headquarters located at 76 S. Main St.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The downtown Akron office building is also known as the FirstEnergy Building. It has 335,000 square feet of space, eight elevators, retailers and restaurants on the first floor, and even an attached, six-level parking garage with space for 1,300 vehicles.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The FirstEnergy Building opened in 1976, with Ohio Edison as its main tenant. Ohio Edison merged with Centerior Energy in 1997, forming FirstEnergy Corp. The then newly formed company opted to keep its headquarters in the downtown Akron office building.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">FirstEnergy Corp. signed the lease extension with building owner McKinley Inc. The energy company\u2019s existing lease was due to expire at the end of next year. With the extension, FirstEnergy will remain in the downtown Akron location through June 2025.
