\"\"<\/a>D.C.\u2019s Shaw neighborhood is now home to a new luxury apartment building. The Colonel officially opened its doors to the public on May 21.<\/p>\n

CityInterests, Douglas Development and CAS Riegler are the developers of the $13 million project. The Colonel is a five-story woodframe building located at 1250 Ninth St., N.W. It offers 70 luxury units and 8,500 square feet of street-level retail space, which, according to the developers, will be occupied by three new restaurants.<\/p>\n

The 64,500-square-foot Colonel includes 46 one-bedroom units, nine two-bedroom units and 15 studios. There are several lofts, apartments with balconies or terraces, and even a two-level penthouse. The smallest units have about 361 square feet of space, while the largest have about 1,156 square feet. They feature hardwood floors, floor-to-ceiling windows and nine-foot ceilings. Common-area amenities include a courtyard, garage parking and a bike room.<\/p>\n

CityInterests, Douglas Development and CAS Riegler started work on the project in 2011. Donohoe Construction was the general contractor, with PGN Architects as the architect. Leasing activities started late last year.<\/em><\/a><\/p>\n

Like its home, D.C.\u2019s Shaw neighborhood, The Colonel was named in honor of Col. Robert Gould Shaw (1837-1863), who commanded the 54th Regiment Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry, the first formal unit of the Union Army during the Civil War to be comprised entirely of African-American men.<\/p>\n
