Chicago\u2019s O\u2019Hare International Airport is going to gain a new intermodal facility that will create approximately 3,000 construction jobs and 100 permanent jobs, according to a statement from Mayor Rahm Emanuel\u2019s press office. The 4.5 million-square-foot facility is expected to reduce traffic congestion in the area and increase accessibility for travelers from around the world.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis intermodal facility is one of the largest capital improvements to be constructed at O\u2019Hare, and will further Chicago\u2019s ongoing efforts to make O\u2019Hare the most convenient international travel hub in the world,\u201d said the mayor. \u201cThis project will serve as a model for new transportation development by delivering improved efficiency, environmental sustainability, a great experience for travelers and an opportunity to create thousands of new jobs for Chicagoans,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n

According to the mayor\u2019s press office, the project is part of a larger, $782 million capital improvement plan that will create nearly 3,000 jobs for Chicagoans. Located on a 33-acre site southeast of the intersection of Mannheim and Zemke roads, the new facility will incorporate as many as nine levels and provide more than 4,200 rental car company parking spaces. The intermodal facility will also include a customer lobby on the first floor and 2,600 public parking spaces.<\/p>\n

The new facility at O\u2019Hare is meant to reduce energy consumption and reduce vehicle traffic at terminal curbs, and is funded through a $288 million federal TIFIA loan. The project will not utilize local or state tax dollars, and is scheduled for completion in 2018.<\/p>\n
