U.S. Olympic Museum<\/em><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Architects at Diller Scofidio + Renfro of New York have revealed the preliminary design concept for the U.S. Olympic Museum and Hall of Fame to be located in Colorado Springs, Colo.<\/p>\n

Elizabeth Diller, partner at Diller Scofidio + Renfro said that the design of the museum is inspired by \u201cthe movement of athletes\u201d, according to Dezeen<\/a>. The 60,000-square-foot museum incorporates a variety of galleries and public areas, which will all be organized around a central atrium.<\/p>\n

The museum will also include 20,000 square feet of exhibit space, a 1,000-square-foot broadcast studio, gift shop, outdoor gathering place and amphitheater, caf\u00e9 and restaurant. Additionally, the building will feature 8,000 square feet of flex space reserved for special events. The project is expected to create up to 150 construction jobs and 80 permanent jobs.<\/p>\n

Located in Colorado Springs\u2019 Southwest Downtown Urban Renewal Area, the U.S. Olympic Museum is expected to break ground in the spring of 2016. Completion is scheduled for December 2017, in time for the winter Olympics. The team chosen to handle the development was first announced in October 2014<\/a>, and includes Anderson Mason Dale Architects, Diller Scofidio + Renfro, Gallagher and Associates of Washington, D.C., Portland-based Pacific Studio, and GE Johnson Construction Co.<\/p>\n

The museum is part of a $250.6 million City for Champions initiative, which includes the development of the U.S. Olympic Museum, the Colorado Sports and Events Center, the Sports Medicine and Performance Center and the Gateway Visitor Center. The initiative is meant to boost the local economy and attract tourism to the Colorado Springs area.<\/p>\n
