Northwestern University broke ground on a new biomedical research center on a site formerly occupied by Prentice Women\u2019s Hospital in Chicago\u2019s Streeterville neighborhood. University and city officials attended a groundbreaking ceremony on May 8, marking the start of construction on the 600,000-square-foot facility.<\/p>\n

Designed by Perkins + Will, the Louis A. Simpson and Kimberly K. Querrey Biomedical Research Center will be located at 333 E. Superior St. Prentice Women\u2019s Hospital has relocated to a nearby location. The Bertrand Goldberg-designed, brutalist-style building was demolished in 2014 after it was denied landmark status by Chicago officials.<\/p>\n

According to The Daily Northwestern<\/a>, construction of the new building will be structured into two phases. Phase one involves the construction of 14 floors, all dedicated to biomedical research, while the second phase will include an additional 15 floors. The facility will create about 2,500 construction jobs and 2,000 permanent jobs, Mayor Rahm Emanuel told reporters at the ceremony.<\/p>\n

Northwestern University president Morton Schapiro hopes that the new research center will bring together scientists from the Feinberg School of Medicine, the McCormick School of Engineering and Applied Science, the Weinberg College of Arts and Sciences, and the Ann & Robert H. Lurie Children\u2019s Hospital, The Daily Northwestern reported<\/a>.<\/p>\n
