Gov. Larry Hogan and Ambassador Kenichiro Sasae of Japan joined Diane Leopold, president of Dominion Energy. The project will create 3,000 temporary construction jobs. Once complete, it will generate an additional $40 million in annual tax revenue to Calvert County, and, according to Hogan, could increase state exports by $5 billion a year.<\/p>\n<p>Following this event, the Governor joined Jim Murren, Chairman &amp; CEO of MGM Resorts International, Lorenzo Creighton, COO of MGM National Harbor, Prince George\u2019s County Executive Rushern Baker and other local officials, on the shores of the Potomac River, to applaud the hiring of the 1,000th worker at MGM\u2019s National Harbor Resort project. The event also represented the groundbreaking ceremony for the $1.25 billion project.<\/p>\n<p>Since starting construction last summer, developers have come a long way. According to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bizjournals.com\/baltimore\/blog\/real-estate\/2015\/03\/mgm-national-harbor-breaks-ground-after-excavating.html?iana=ind_cre&amp;page=all\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\"><em>Washington Business Journal<\/em><\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/synd.yardi.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/46\/2015\/03\/MGM-National-Harbor.jpg\">,<\/a> Whiting-Turner, the project\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.commercialsearch.com\/news\/cities\/washington-dc\/mgm-resorts-international-hires-whiting-turner-as-general-contractor-for-1b-mgm-national-harbor-project\/1004099542.html\">general contractor<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/synd.yardi.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/46\/2015\/03\/MGM-National-Harbor.jpg\">,<\/a> has excavated more than 500,000 cubic yards of soil and driven more than 6,000 foundation piles. The 1 million-square-foot resort is scheduled to open in the second half of 2016.
