A new Hyatt Place hotel is coming to downtown St. Paul at 180 Kellogg Blvd. East.<\/p>\n

Hyatt Hotels Corp., together with Des Moines, Iowa-based Nelson Development and Exeter Group, is planning a five-story, 149-room Hyatt Place hotel, to be located in the former U.S. Post Office building in the city\u2019s Lowertown<\/a> neighborhood.<\/p>\n

The 17-story building on Kellogg Boulevard functioned as the city\u2019s main post office for 79 years, and was the third-busiest post office location in the U.S. during World War II. St. Paul native Exeter Group acquired the property in 2013 and managed to get it listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The 748,000-square-foot property is now in the midst of a massive redevelopment called Custom House, with Exeter at the helm as master developer. Nelson Development has acquired a portion of the building for the construction of the new Hyatt Place, scheduled for opening in April 2016. Wichita, Kan.-based LodgeWorks Partners has been selected to manage the hotel.<\/p>\n

\u201cExeter Group is extremely pleased that Hyatt, Nelson and LodgeWorks have teamed up on this exciting Hyatt Place project at Custom House, which will be a great complement to this best-in-class mixed-use redevelopment, which includes the Residences at Custom House, 202 luxury apartments on the upper floor, as well as other retail and commercial uses,\u201d said Herb Tousley, chief development manager at Exeter Group.<\/p>\n

The Hyatt Place hotel will be conveniently located adjacent to the newly renovated Union Depot transit hub, the new Lowertown Ballpark, the Science Museum of Minnesota, the Xcel Energy Center and Mears Park. The hotel will offer guests a fitness center, a swimming pool, more than 1,800 square feet of meeting and event space, complimentary Wi-Fi, as well as a number of dining options. According to a news release, the developer plans to preserve the building\u2019s historic features, including the art deco lobby and the 13-foot guestroom windows.<\/p>\n
