The New Children’s Pavilion<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

With a steel beam hoisted to the top of its 15-story frame, the $168 million pavilion at Children\u2019s Hospital of Richmond is a giant step closer to completion. In a ceremony held on Monday, Dec. 1, Virginia Commonwealth University marked the topping out of the project.<\/p>\n

When it opens in 2016, the 640,000-square-foot facility will be the region\u2019s most advanced outpatient facility for children, including 72 exam rooms, a surgical area with two operating rooms and two procedure rooms, laboratories, offices, retail space and a parking structure with 600-plus spaces.<\/p>\n

Skanska USA Building Inc., the project\u2019s general contractor, is building the facility adjacent to the existing children\u2019s pavilion, which is located across the street from the VCU Medical Center. The pavilion\u2019s design by HKS Inc. recently won an award from the American Institute of Architects\u2019 Academy of Architecture in the healthcare category.<\/p>\n

The project has so far created 150 skilled trade jobs and will generate nearly 500 when construction of the building\u2019s interior is in full swing. Since the project began, the hospital has hired nearly 40 new pediatric specialists, increased research funding by 30 percent and developed two new advanced training fellowship programs.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhile construction crew members worked together to build the structural frame you see today, groups of CHoR team members from all disciplines have been collaborating to develop new programs, implement process improvements and enhance the patient experience we provide now \u2013 and that we will provide within the walls of the new pavilion,\u201d Leslie Wyatt, senior vice president for children\u2019s services and executive director of CHoR, said in a statement.<\/p>\n
