The Oklahoma State Department of Health, represented by Commissioner of Health Dr. Terry Cline, recently announced plans to develop a specialized Ebola treatment facility in the Oklahoma City. The project is a partnership of the Oklahoma State Department of Health, the Oklahoma Hospital Association, Oklahoma University Medical Center management, and metropolitan hospitals in Tulsa and Oklahoma City. The treatment facility will be operated by the OU Medical Center.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe are proud of OU Medical Center\u2019s willingness to serve as a Center of Excellence,\u201d Cline said in a statement. \u201cWhile our Oklahoma hospitals have each been preparing for weeks and are capable of treating an Ebola patient, this collaborative effort with OU Medical Center taking the lead will better prepare our state and healthcare system should the need arise.\u201d<\/p>\n

The recent hospitalization of a patient suspected of Ebola in Tulsa further emphasized the need for a specialized treatment center in the state. Although the patient eventually tested negative for the Ebola virus, heath care officials wish to be prepared for any potential outbreak of Ebola or other infectious diseases. The new facility will be staffed by a specially trained infectious disease response team.<\/p>\n

Located in a decommissioned hospital building on the Oklahoma Health Center campus, the unit will be separate from existing patient care facilities, to prevent the disease from spreading. It will incorporate isolation and biohazard areas, as well as lab space, all in a negative airflow environment. Construction ix expected to take about four weeks.<\/p>\n
