Capitol Technology University broke ground Oct. 22 on a new residence complex located on the school\u2019s 52-acre campus in Laurel, Md. When finished, it will house 300 undergraduate students.<\/span><\/p>\n

Manekin Construction, L.L.C. headquartered in Columbia, Md., has been selected to construct the new residential hall. It will have four stories and 100,000 square feet of space. Each suite will have kitchens and living rooms. The common areas will feature exercise rooms and study areas.<\/p>\n

Capitol Technology University, formerly known as Capitol College, did not disclose the cost of the project. It will be developed in two phases. Phase I calls for the construction of 50 suites that will accommodate 198 students, and is expected to be completed in time for the fall semester in 2015. Phase II is scheduled to be completed by the fall of 2016 and will provide housing for an additional 102 students.<\/p>\n

The project is part of the university\u2019s five-year strategic plan to address the demand for STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) education on the undergraduate and graduate levels. As part of this initiative, Capitol Technology University also plans to develop an innovation and leadership institute, a convocations center and gymnasium complex.
\n\u201cCapitol is entering a new era to fulfill the increasing need for a workforce educated for the challenges and opportunities of tomorrow,\u201d Michael Wood, president of the university, said in a statement. \u201cWe have a very forward-looking plan for campus development with residence halls, academic buildings and other facilities that will transform Capitol physically as we expand our reach as a provider of higher education.\u201d<\/p>\n

Michael Steele, former lieutenant governor of Maryland, was also present at the groundbreaking ceremony. \u201cFrom expanding cybersecurity and gaming degree programs to building new dorms here on campus, this university speaks with assurance about its future. And indeed your future is bright,\u201d he said. \u201cIt is bright because Capitol Technology University remains true to its founding \u2014 to nurture the talent of its young people, to ensure that each generation not only survives academically but thrives professionally.\u201d<\/p>\n
