\"\"<\/a>Turner Construction Co. is doing its part to help with the development of our nation\u2019s youth. The international construction services company has been working hard these past few months to renovate several schools in the Washington, D.C., area. It managed to complete the projects just in time for the new school year.<\/p>\n

In a news release, Turner said its biggest achievement was the opening of the Jefferson-Houston PreK-8 School, the newest educational building in Alexandria in more than 10 years. The new school is a replacement for the existing Jefferson-Houston School in the city\u2019s Historic Downtown. It is a 128,776-square-foot facility, with a capacity to house between 700 and 800 students.<\/p>\n

Turner started work on the project last May. It managed to create a 21st century learning environment while respecting the historic architecture of the original building. The new school is targeting LEED Silver certification. It features a white box theater and media center, and was designed with a focus on STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Mathematics).<\/p>\n

Phase One of construction is already complete, and the new school opened its doors to students on Sept. 2. Turner has already started work on the second phase of the project, which calls for the demolition of the old school and the construction of new athletic fields and playgrounds in its place.<\/p>\n

In what can be considered a brilliant marketing move, Turner employees were present on Aug. 25, the first day of school, at Friendship Tech Prep Public Charter School, Kramer Middle School, Stanton Elementary School, Janney Elementary School, Shepherd Elementary School and Hearst Elementary School to greet students. They passed out fact sheets with information about the updated schools, as well as pencils for students to use in class. Turner workers were also present on Sept. 2 at the opening of Jefferson-Houston.<\/p>\n

“Today was a great day, after months of high energy, hard work and teamwork to complete these projects on time. Our teams got the satisfaction of seeing firsthand the appreciation for their work from their true clients, the students and parents entering their new school buildings for the first time,\u201d Ken Jones, vice president & general manager at Turner, said in a statement for the press. \u201cOn days like today, all the hard work is more than worth it.”<\/p>\n
