If you read\u00a0through some of the highlighted work over\u00a0the past year, it is easy to see why the extra\u00a0hands on deck were needed.<\/p>\n<p>The past year saw a flurry of M&amp;A activity,\u00a0and you will find firms representing both sides\u00a0of the largest deals of 2013 and the first quarter\u00a0of 2014 (most notably ARCP\u2019s acquisition\u00a0of Cole). While multi-family transactions still comprise a hefty portion of these firms\u2019 activity,\u00a0there appears to be an uptick in retail and\u00a0office work\u2014a trend that mirrors what we are seeing in commercial real estate activity.<\/p>\n<p>One last takeaway from this list is the\u00a0growth of the general law industry. Though\u00a0this ranking only represents a cross section\u00a0of the largest firms, it is important to note\u00a0that the number of law offices operated has\u00a0increased significantly since 2011. In that\u00a0year, there were 417 offices; in 2013, there\u00a0were 487, a nearly 17 percent increase. The firms were asked to\u00a0provide information on their practice areas, experience\u00a0of their real estate associates, offices,\u00a0revenues, employees, tenure of real estate\u00a0staff and special areas of practice.
