On June 24, the company announced the start of construction on a new independent living residential building and a new clubhouse. The total cost of the expansion project is more than $22 million.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The new residential building will be called Hickory Glen and will have 124,000 square feet of space. It will offer 68 one- and two-bedroom apartments with stainless steel kitchen appliances, granite countertops and upgraded lighting and flooring options. Underground parking will also be available. Erickson Living is investing $14.3 million to construct Hickory Glen.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cThe rising demand for additional residences at Ashby Ponds is undeniable,\u201d said Holly Henderson, director of sales for the retirement community, in a statement. \u201cTwo-thirds of the apartment homes in Hickory Glen have already been reserved.  We continue to find that our campus location, our financial strength and structure, and our service offerings combine to provide prospective residents with a perfect match for the retirement lifestyle they desire.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Erickson Living is also constructing the Great Oak Clubhouse, the second community building at Ashby Ponds. It will be a 20,000-square-foot clubhouse with a performing arts theater, a caf\u00e9, a banquet room, a reading room, an art studio and gallery, additional classrooms and a new control room for the community\u2019s in-house television station. The total cost of the project is $7.9 million.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cThe new clubhouse will be a wonderful and welcomed addition to the community,\u201d Henderson added. \u201cResidents will now be able to enjoy a fifth dining venue, a large-scale performance space and a dedicated area for the many artisans at the community.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Both buildings are scheduled to open in early 2015. Baltimore\u2019s Marks, Thomas Architects is the project\u2019s architect, with Whiting-Turner as the general contractor.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Ashby Ponds is one of 17 retirement communities managed by Erickson Living.
