The awards were announced during a reception on June\u00a0 13<sup>th<\/sup>, during NAREE\u2019s 48<sup>th<\/sup> annual Real Estate Journalism Conference in Houston.<\/p>\n<p>The awards honor \u201cjournalists who cover residential and commercial real estate, mortgage finance, home and urban design, luxury and green building,\u201d whether in print, online or on air. The competition is judged by journalism faculty of the E.W. Scripps School of Journalism at Ohio University, based on clarity of writing, objectivity, originality, depth of reporting and design where applicable.<\/p>\n<p><i>CPE<\/i> won Silver awards in three categories\u2014Best Web Site, Best Series and Best Trade Magazine Report\u2014and a Bronze award for Best Commercial Trade Magazine Report.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe graphics are clean and bright, the navigation bar is well organized, and it offers a variety of data analysis, interviews and features,\u201d wrote the judges about the Web site, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.commercialsearch.com\/news\">CPExecutive<\/a>. \u201cThe organization of news by community, where users can click by city, is extremely helpful.\u201d The site also won a Silver award last year.<\/p>\n<p>The Silver for Best Trade Magazine Report went to senior associate editor Mike Ratliff for the cover story \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/digital.commercialsearch.com\/news\/publication\/?i=180588&amp;p=20\">Remaking the Suburbs<\/a>,\u201d which appeared in the <a href=\"https:\/\/digital.commercialsearch.com\/news\/publication\/?i=180588\">November 2013<\/a> issue.\u00a0 With the big focus today on moves to urban areas, the story addressed the fate of the suburbs and the possibilities for reinventing them. Observed the judges: \u201cThis story examined the growth of urban downtowns over the surrounding suburbs. Packed with surprising facts, such as the construction of only one enclosed mall in the U.S. since 2006, the reporter pointed to a future of walkable, livable urban centers.\u201d Ratliff also won a Gold award for Best Commercial Trade Magazine Report for a cover story for sister publication Multi-Housing News, as well as a Gold Ruth Ryon Award for Best Young Journalist, one of the three overall awards for the competition. According to the judges: \u201cThis reporter is skilled at spotting real estate trends and picking out the telling details that illustrate them. He writes well about both big and small pictures.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>CPE\u2019s Best Series and Best Commercial Trade Magazine Report awards were for coverage of the growing incidence of extreme weather and its impact on commercial and residential real estate that appeared in the January and February 2013 issues. Specifically, senior editor Paul Rosta took home the Bronze for \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/digital.commercialsearch.com\/news\/publication\/?i=139250&amp;p=26\">After the Storm<\/a>,\u201d an examination in the January 2013 issue of lessons learned from Hurricane Sandy and how they were likely to impact real estate development. The Best Series entry featured the special section \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/digital.commercialsearch.com\/news\/publication\/?i=139250&amp;p=26\">When Disaster Strikes<\/a>,\u201d which focused on outcomes from Hurricane Sandy and included \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/digital.commercialsearch.com\/news\/publication\/?i=139250&amp;p=26\">After the Storm<\/a>,\u201d as well as \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/digital.commercialsearch.com\/news\/publication\/?i=139250&amp;p=31\">Facing the Test<\/a>,\u201d Rosta\u2019s account of the hurricane\u2019s impact on building operations and likely results for property management practices, and \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/digital.commercialsearch.com\/news\/publication\/?i=139250&amp;p=34\">Data Revisited<\/a>,\u201d contributor Dees Stribling\u2019s look at data protection and restoration measures. It also included a follow-up Q&amp;A by editorial director Suzann Silverman in the\u00a0 <a href=\"https:\/\/digital.commercialsearch.com\/news\/publication\/?i=143758&amp;p=25\">February issue<\/a> titled \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/digital.commercialsearch.com\/news\/publication\/?i=143758&amp;p=25\">Blowing in the Wind<\/a>.\u201d While much of the hurricane coverage focused on water damage, this Q&amp;A addressed another important and growing concern: risks for wind damage.<\/p>\n<p>Regarding \u201cAfter the Storm,\u201d the judges noted: \u201cNatural disasters often bring swift second guessing after the fact. This report marshaled an impressive number of sources\u2014and not just the usual suspects\u2014to detail what needed to be done to minimize the impact of future storms like Hurricane Sandy. The writer should be commended on the quick turnaround on this detailed report.\u201d Of the series, they wrote: \u201cThis three-part special report was an enterprising look at urban property planning and risk management pegged to the recent Hurricane Sandy disaster in New York and New Jersey. Particularly effective was a question-and-answer story with insurance experts about wind damage.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><i>CPE<\/i> won two awards last year. NAREE, now in its 85th year, works to help further journalistic efforts in the fields of residential, commercial and financial real estate, home and urban design, and green building.
