The UPMC health system has announced it would relocate its 450 employees from Chatham Center to Heinz 57 Center at 339 Sixth Avenue in downtown Pittsburgh. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

According to the Pittsburgh Business Times<\/a><\/em>, UPMC has reached an agreement with H.J. Heinz Co. to sublease about 140,000 square feet across three floors, which served as the North American headquarters for the ketchup maker. The move is expected to occur by the end of summer. <\/span><\/p>\n

Last summer, H.J. Heinz Co. announced it would lay off 600 employees across its operations in the U.S. and Canada, including 350 in Pittsburgh. Soon after, the local office of CBRE began marketing for sublease 276,705 square feet of office space at the 790,000-square-foot Heinz 57 Center, the former department store building owned by McKnight Realty Partners. Heinz’ remaining space at the property is in the range of 23,000 square feet. <\/span><\/p>\n

UPMC has agreed to occupy the new space for 12 years, matching the term of the food company\u2019s sublease, which expires in 2026.<\/span><\/p>\n

In other news, the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette<\/a><\/em> reports that the Pittsburgh-Allegheny County Sports & Exhibition Authority (SEA) is planning to build a deck over Crosstown Boulevard that would connect downtown Pittsburgh with the 28-acre former Civic Arena site in the lower Hill District. <\/span><\/p>\n

SEA board members have already approved an approximately $900,000 federal grant to help fund the $1.1 million preliminary design work for the project, which entails an estimated total investment of $27 million.<\/span><\/p>\n

The SEA is also investing about $30 million in the infrastructure work of the former arena site, which is scheduled to begin in August. By October, <\/span>the Pittsburgh Penguins hockey team is expected to start the redevelopment of the property, which will include residential, office and commercial space. <\/span><\/p>\n
