<\/a>By Adriana Pop, Associate Editor <\/span><\/em><\/p>\nKamehameha Schools has announced it will begin construction on the SALT at Our Kakaako retail and restaurant project in downtown Honolulu later this month. <\/span><\/p>\nCalled “Salt” in recognition of the neighborhood\u2019s salt ponds of the mid-1800s, the new 76,000-square-foot development will be located on the block bounded by Ala Moana Boulevard and Coral, Keawe and Auahi streets. Businesses in the area will remain open during construction, according to the developer.<\/span><\/p>\nHawaii’s largest private landowner will invest approximately $30 million in the project, which includes the adaptive reuse of four buildings, as well as the construction of a 267-stall parking structure along Keawe Street and a 4,500-square-foot building on Coral Street. Plans also call for the conversion of an existing surface parking area into an open plaza with a splash-and-play water feature, recreation and seating spaces.<\/span><\/p>\nHonolulu-based Hawaiian Dredging, the project\u2019s general contractor, expects to complete construction by the end of 2015. Hawaii-owned INK Architects is the lead architect.<\/span><\/p>\n\u201cThe challenge to reuse these older warehouses and their materials creates an opportunity to build a beautifully gritty shopping and dining experience that can only exist in urban Honolulu,\u201d said Christian O\u2019Connor, Kamehameha\u2019s senior asset manager in charge of leasing and management of the project. \u201cThis project is uniquely Hawai\u2018i. It isn\u2019t a cookie-cutter mall that could be imported or transplanted from somewhere else.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\nThe Salt retail and restaurant project will be part of Kamehameha Schools\u2019 15-year Our Kaka\u2018ako master plan, a mixed-use, urban-island community that would spread across nine contiguous city blocks in the heart of Honolulu, between South Street and Ward Avenue.
