\nThe Federal Transit Administration has agreed to grant $116 million to a Salt Lake City transportation project. The local community will benefit from a TRAX extension from Sandy to Draper, a project that according to federal official Peter Rogoff will provide \u201creliable and desirable transit\u201d to the aforementioned communities. Rogoff, the chief of the Federal Transit Administration, was present at an announcement event held at Draper City Park.
\nThe full funding agreement asks that the federal government pay 60 percent of the total cost for the TRAX extension. The project, 50 percent of which has been completed, requires for 3.8 miles to be added to the current TRAX network. The Salt Lake Tribune reports that the three stations that will be added to the TRAX line will require a total investment of $194 million. The chief of the FTA has praised Salt Lake City citizens and officials for the way in which they have handled the project.
\nThe manager of light-rail engineering and construction, part of the Utah Transit Authority, said that the rail element of the project is currently in place. Stations and overhead power lines are currently under construction with estimates placing the project completion in May 2012. After the construction process is finished, a six month period will be filled with tests and receiving certifications, after which the actual opening can take place.
\nThe extension is part of a host of projects created by the UTA that was scheduled for completion in 2015. However, most of those projects have already been completed or are on track to be, in the near future. These projects include the West Valley City and Mid-Jordan TRAX extensions, completed, the under-construction extension of TRAX to Salt Lake City International Airport as well as the Salt Lake City \u2013 Provo commuter rail dubbed FrontRunner.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
