{"id":1004068010,"date":"2013-02-28T12:08:45","date_gmt":"2013-02-28T20:08:45","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/synd.yardi.com\/?p=105987"},"modified":"2020-04-21T04:58:40","modified_gmt":"2020-04-21T12:58:40","slug":"detroit-invited-to-bid-for-the-2024-summer-olympics","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.commercialsearch.com\/news\/detroit-invited-to-bid-for-the-2024-summer-olympics\/","title":{"rendered":"Detroit Invited to Bid for the 2024 Summer Olympics"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><em>By Veronica Grecu, Associate Editor<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Twenty-five large cities and metropolitan areas in the U.S. and 10 other international cities that have expressed interest in hosting an Olympic competition have received invitation letters from the U.S. Olympic Committee (USOC) to bid for the 2024 Summer Olympic and Paralympic Games.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/synd.yardi.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/46\/2013\/02\/Detroit-2024-Olympics.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-105989\" title=\"Detroit 2024 Olympics\" src=\"https:\/\/synd.yardi.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/46\/2013\/02\/Detroit-2024-Olympics.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"201\" \/><\/a>Though still fighting to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.commercialsearch.com\/news\/cities\/detroit\/local-incentives-and-federal-programs-help-revive-metro-detroit-residential-market\/\">recover from the economic decline<\/a> that caused a massive loss of population, Detroit was one of the recipients. According to <em><a href=\"https:\/\/detroit2020.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">detroit2020.com<\/a><\/em>, the city placed seven bids between 1939 and 1966 to host the summer games but each time gathered only a small number of votes, despite the city\u2019s efforts to win the bids.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Written by USOC Chief Executive Officer Scott A. Blackmun, the invitation to bid letter emphasizes the unparalleled opportunity for a city to evolve socially and economically. Once chosen to stage such an event, a host city would require operating budgets in excess of $3 billion, not including costs related to venue construction and other infrastructure.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">USOC \u00a0lists a number of infrastructure and financial requirements that an Olympic host city should include:<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">&#8211;\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 45,000 hotel rooms<br \/>\n&#8211;\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 an international airport that can handle thousands of international travelers per day<br \/>\n&#8211;\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 an Olympic Village that can accommodate 16,500 people and has a 5,000-person<br \/>\ndining hall<br \/>\n&#8211;\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 meeting and operations space for over 15,000 media and broadcasters<br \/>\n&#8211;\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 public transportation service to venues<br \/>\n&#8211;\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 roadway closures to allow exclusive use for games-related transportation<br \/>\n&#8211;\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 a workforce of up to 200,000.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">If the authorities decide to bid for the 2024 Games, Motown would compete against major cities that also got the invitation, such as New York, Chicago, Dallas, Boston and Los Angeles.
