{"id":1004067672,"date":"2013-02-21T14:18:34","date_gmt":"2013-02-21T22:18:34","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/synd.yardi.com\/?p=104326"},"modified":"2025-02-25T23:36:32","modified_gmt":"2025-02-26T07:36:32","slug":"plans-to-upgrade-tucson-convention-center-build-new-convention-hotel","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.commercialsearch.com\/news\/plans-to-upgrade-tucson-convention-center-build-new-convention-hotel\/","title":{"rendered":"Plans to Upgrade Tucson Convention Center, Build New Convention Hotel"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>By Camelia Bulea, Associate Editor<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/synd.yardi.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/46\/2013\/02\/tucson-convention-center.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-104327\" src=\"https:\/\/synd.yardi.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/46\/2013\/02\/tucson-convention-center.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"300\" \/><\/a>The City of Tucson and the Rio Nuevo Multipurpose Facilities District have reached an agreement that would bring a new convention center hotel to downtown Tucson.<\/p>\n<p>According to the long-awaited settlement, Rio Nuevo will invest $6 million in upgrading the Tucson Convention Center, a multi-purpose property built in 1971 boasting a 9,275-seat indoor arena, two performing arts venues, and 205,000 square feet of meeting space.<\/p>\n<p>Additionally, Rio Nuevo will invest $1.1 million in the Mission gardens project, and spend $750,000 on downtown streetscape improvements, according to a news release by the Rio Nuevo Board.<\/p>\n<p>The news release also states that Rio Nuevo will be reimbursed over $16 million for the Depot Garage and will be transferred ownership of the Heritage Park property.<\/p>\n<p>As far as the new hotel project is concerned, plans call for a facility with about 500 rooms and 50,000 square feet of meeting space, said Brent DeRaad, president and CEO of the Metropolitan Tucson Convention and Visitors Bureau, as quoted by the <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.insidetucsonbusiness.com\/news\/city-rio-nuevo-end-dispute-now-begin-to-talk-about\/article_8b64da52-76d3-11e2-80b8-0019bb2963f4.html\" rel=\"nofollow\">Inside Tucson Business<\/a><\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>In 2009 there were plans for a major Tucson Hotel and Convention Center project, designed by DLR Group, as part of a private-public investment.
