Tezzaron Semiconductor Corp. has announced it will buy the wafer fabrication plant on Montopolis Drive in southeast Austin, preventing more than 100 layoffs. Formerly run by SVTC Technologies LLC, the plant is the only facility of its kind on the continent.<\/p>\n

According to J.T. Ayers, Tezzaron’s CEO, the plant supports product innovations for semiconductors, life sciences, clean energy, aerospace and defense. The building is owned by the University of Texas System.<\/p>\n

Tezzaron plans to use the fab to create three-dimensional stacks of processed silicon wafers to create very compact, high-performance and low-power electronics components. Additionally, Tezzaron plans to transfer several sales people to Austin from SVTC\u2019s fabrication plant in San Jose, Calif., which shut down last month.<\/p>\n

SVTC bought the fab in late 2007 from the Sematech research consortium, which had operated it since the late 1980s as a research center. Tezzaron employs 20 people in Illinois, where it plans to double staff over the next few months, according to the Austin-American Statesman<\/em>.<\/p>\n

In other news, Austin-based Silicon Laboratories Inc. has purchased two buildings it had been leasing for its headquarters in a transaction worth $94.4 million. According to the Your News Now<\/em>, the company\u2014which develops integrated circuits for products from cars to computers\u2014bought the buildings that flank City Hall on West Cesar Chavez with the intention of solidifying its presence in downtown Austin.<\/p>\n
