Boston Herald<\/em> owner\ufeff\ufeff\ufeff\ufeff\ufeff\ufeff\ufeff\ufeff\ufeff Patrick Purcell and Newton-based National Development have put together a plan to convert the newspaper’s headquarters and printing plant into a vibrant mixed-use development that would enliven a dull part of the city where South End, South Boston and Chinatown meet. Last week, an attorney representing the joint venture filed a letter of intent with the Boston Redevelopment Authority; the project notification form will be filed by the end of this month. If BRA approves the Herald <\/em>project, the area\u2019s zoning will allow construction of 150 to 200 feet, provided that the plan improves the surrounding streets, according to the Boston Globe<\/em>.<\/p>\n Ted Tye from National Development said that the Herald <\/em>will move to another location by the end of 2011, and the redevelopment is expected to break ground at the site in the first quarter of 2012.<\/p>\n The two-story building was completed in the 1950s and housed the Boston Herald <\/em>offices for more than 50 years. Because the paper chose to outsource its printing operations, the site was underutilized during recent years.<\/p>\n The redevelopment will consist of 262 residential units; 63,000 square feet of retail space including a grocery store, a restaurant and smaller businesses; 263 underground and 192 surface parking spaces for residents; as well as various environmentally friendly amenities. According to The Boston Globe<\/em>, the six-acre building will remain intact, as developers will keep the Herald<\/em>\u2019s foundation to raise an apartment building that will not be larger than the existing building.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":" By Veronica Grecu, Associate Editor
