The Ohio School Facilities Commission and Elyria City Schools\u00a0on Dec. 21 selected the Gilbane Building Co. to provide construction management services for a project that will provide modern buildings for more than 3,200 students in the Elyria district. The school construction initiative is estimated to cost $88 million.<\/p>\n
The program is designed by Architectural Vision Group. It includes the construction of five elementary schools to house pre-kindergarten through fifth grade and the demolition of 11 existing schools. Robert Sewell, Gilbane\u2019s senior project executive for the Elyria City Schools effort, stated in a press release that the construction initiative \u201cwill deliver tremendous new learning facilities for the city’s children, together with significant operational savings, thanks to the consolidation of the older facilities.” Gilbane Building Co. and the Ohio School Facilities Commission have worked together on a series of projects to build and improve Ohio\u2019s K-12 schools since 1998.<\/p>\n
Gilbane was founded in 1873 and is still a privately held, family-run company, with more than 60 offices around the world. The company has provided construction management services for many of Ohio\u2019s most prominent organizations, among them the Cleveland Clinic, University Hospitals, KeyBank, Huntington National Bank, Progressive Insurance, Kent State University, the Cleveland Metropolitan School District, Ohio State University, Battelle, Nationwide Children\u2019s Hospital, OhioHealth and Franklin County.<\/p>\n
In other real estate news, construction started on a $27 million Courtyard by Marriott hotel in University Circle. The project is a joint venture between Raleigh\u2019s Concord Hospitality Enterprises Inc. and Snavely Group of Chagrin Falls, with Snavely handling construction and Concord managing it.<\/p>\n
The Great Recession put the project on hold for a few years, but with necessary funds secured, it is ready to get underway. The $27 million financing package came from six sources, including Cleveland and Cuyahoga County loans, funds raised through federal new market tax credits and construction union pension funds.<\/p>\n
The eight-story, 153-room hotel is expected to open in late 2012. It is estimated that it will create 150 construction jobs.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
