Poydras Home, a nonprofit retirement community serving greater New Orleans, recently announced plans to break ground on a new assisted living residence Uptown in January 2012.<\/p>\n
The Poydras community sits on a three-and-a-half acre site at Magazine Street and Jefferson Avenue and current includes four buildings that provide space for independent living, assisted living, nursing care services and Alzheimer’s and memory support services.<\/p>\n
Poydras is currently reviewing construction bids for a fifth building and expects the project to take about a year to complete, according to New Orleans City Business<\/em>. Investment is estimated at about $14.5 million, to cover costs related to the new development and interior renovations of some of the existing buildings.<\/p>\n The new three-story building will face Magazine Street and will feature 11 apartments for assisted dementia on the first floor, while the second and third floors will each provide 11 apartments for classic assisted living. Upon completion, the facility will provide 16 new jobs.<\/p>\n In other commercial news, the Times-Picayune<\/em> reports that costs are consistently going up for the Jefferson Performing Arts Center, a state-financed project under construction on Airline Drive in Metairie. Initially estimated at $26.5 million, costs continue to escalate and may reach $53.1 million if the latest change order gets approved by Jefferson officials. Currently, the development bears a $44.7 million price tag. Construction manager Perrin & Carter is working on the job with architect Tony Gendusa and builder J. Caldarera & Co.<\/p>\n And the Southern Hotel building in downtown Covington is about to get a major facelift. The property was recently acquired by Condrey Southern Hotel for $1.8 million. Renovation costs have not been revealed, but the new owner, Covington attorney Lisa Condrey, plans to transform the 37,778-square-foot building into a hotel and office building, with the groundbreaking scheduled for early 2012.<\/p>\n “Covington is a unique town, and I believe the development of this property as a hotel will allow others to experience the benefits of this community \u2014 its shops, the river, the bike paths, art galleries and great restaurants,\u201d Lisa Condrey told New Orleans City Business<\/em>. “Revitalizing this historic building has been a dream of mine for about 10 years, and we look forward to working with the city to make it happen as quickly as possible.”<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":" By Amalia Otet, Associate Editor
